10 Essentials to Make it through Lockdown

So fam, here we are again, another lockdown. At this point I can’t tell if I am getting better or worse at these restrictive times. What I can tell you, it is essential to bring yourself some joy during this period and this is my list (in no particular order) of my lockdown essentials.

1. A good selection of houseplants

I haven’t always had the greenest thumb, however, having real plants around the house is an absolute delight. Not only does looking after them give me a sense of pride, but houseplants have also often been promoted for their health benefits. Not only are they BEAUTIFUL to look at, studies have shown that indoor plants improve concentration, productivity, reduce stress and boost your mood.

If you’re in Apollo Bay, head down the Barham and visit Barham Valley Nursery for an incredible selection of indoor and outdoor plants. Plus, the air is so beautiful there you feel fresher from just visiting.

2. Arts, Crafts and Journaling

There is a lot to be said for getting the creative juices flowing, it’s a good way to keep the hands busy, balance the brain and it has been shown that colouring in has the ability to relax the amygdala, the fear centre of your brain. Arts, crafts, colouring in, journaling, whatever your artistic expression, can induce the same state of mind as meditating; by reducing the thoughts of a restless mind.

I cannot recommend Dreamy Moons enough for all your colouring in, mindfulness and journal needs. Visit the website https://dreamymoons.com.au/ or check it out on Instagram @dreamy_moons

3. Online fitness and mindfulness classes

There has been a boom in this industry and we (as a collective) are reaping the absolute benefits. There is a plethora to choose from, plenty of freebies on YouTube and then programs you can purchase. My two favourites for fitness are:

As a qualified Yoga Teacher I regularly practice yoga, breathwork and mindfulness, but nothing beats having a stranger on the internet kicking my butt.

4. Comfortable clothes

It is now acceptable for you to wear yoga pants every single day. Leg warmers, yoga leggings, oversized sweaters and old t-shirts (I love wearing my parents old and unwanted t-shirts). Get up in the morning, get dressed in something comfy and enjoy.

5. Oil diffuser/Soy Candles/Incense

This for me is a must have for my house, period. Being surrounded by beautiful smells is so important for me. There are numerous benefits and so many options out there but but I LOVE the pyramid shaped candles from SLWBRN candles, find them at their website https://slwbrncandles.com/ or on Instagram @slwbrncandles

6. A good selection of 90s films

At some point in time, the TV is coming on and rather than mindlessly flicking through channels, get yourself sorted with movies from the golden age of cinema. I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia, the deep storylines, the music, the way they were shot, but the 90s will always be my favourite era for films. These are my top 10 options for you to binge immediately:

  1. Empire Records

  2. Almost Famous

  3. The Craft

  4. 10 Things I Hate About You

  5. Basic Instinct

  6. There’s Something About Mary

  7. The Virgin Suicides

  8. Romeo and Juliet

  9. Good Will Hunting

  10. Practical Magic

7. Chocolate

It wouldn’t be a list that I made if it didn’t include chocolate. I can’t help it, Cacao is my Crack-oa and I could not make it through a lockdown without it (let alone a day in my life).

You can find plenty of Cacao goodies at RAWR Bar for sale. My favourites are:

  • Sacred Taste – buy your own packs of Cacao to make your own or make a warming elixir. Visit them at @wearesacred on Instagram or https://sacredtaste.com/

  • Loco Love Chocolate – decadent and divine https://locolove.com/

  • Loving Earth – at RAWR we use Loving Earth Cacao in our raw desserts and our smoothies. The original cacao curators, I will always be a fan.

8. Recipe/Food inspiration

I love food. I love cooking, I love creating and I love having the time that lock down provides to let me experiment in the kitchen (silver linings, am I right?). Max La Manna is the MAN when it comes to simple, delicious recipes that prevent food waste. He has a cookbook for sale at www.maxlamanna.com but offers so many free tutorials and recipes on his Instagram @maxlamanna

9. A schedule

Sounds ridiculous, I know, but taking five minutes at the start of the week to set aside a schedule of jobs and activities I want to complete, getting out of bed in the morning, having a shower, putting on the aforementioned comfy clothes and setting about on a semi-routine has done wonders for my mental health.

10. Vitamin D

Finally, every single day I go outside. Fresh air and sunshine are two pillars of health and wellness. You’re given an hour to go outside, go and enjoy it. Smell the air, feel the sun and the breeze on your skin, inhale with gratitude that you are alive and well and exhale all the bullshit that has come up from being cooped up inside.

Love Always

X Tishy
